Name your own rate hotel launches

When something is said to be too good to be true, it generally is. But not so the launch of the Ibis Singapore hotel, which is allowing guests to book online - and name their own room rate.

Customers can log onto the hotel's website www.paywhatyouwant.com.sg during designated sales periods and name their price for available rooms ahead of the opening of Accor’s Ibis Singapore on February 12.

Hiro Inoue, Ibis Singapore marketing director, said bids have gone as high as S$100 dollars but that any price offered - even one dollar - would be accepted, subject to availability.

"Given the current economic turmoil people are seeking deals, which is adding to the appeal of the promotion. But regular travellers are also seeking value accommodation," Inoue said.

AFP said several thousand visitors have registered since the promotion began on Wednesday, and the first days' rooms were sold out in minutes with bookings coming from all over the world, he added.  However, Accor has no plans as yet to use the bidding system for its other hotels, Inoue said.

Islands of Romance

If you could choose one of the most romantic places on earth to escape to for that ‘special’ wedding or secluded honeymoon, then you would surely choose the Cook Islands.

Couples from all over the world are choosing to get married there; they feel that escaping to the magic of a tropical island wedding is the ultimate in romance. Each year many couples exchange vows in these islands, creating their own dreams and a partnership to last a lifetime.

Couples need to be in the Cook Islands three full days prior to the ceremony to obtain their marriage licence. Documents required are individual passports and birth certificates, plus divorce and death of spouse papers if applicable. The legal age of consent to marry is 21 years, otherwise written approval by parents is required. The Registrar may waiver the three day requirement in special circumstances, but your wedding coordinator must apply in advance and a small fee is applicable. Application for this licence cannot be made outside the Cook Islands.
