Qantas Unveils Next Generation Cabin Upgrades for A330 Aircraft

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]October 25th, 2024 - Qantas Announces Multimillion Dollar Upgrade to A330 Aircraft Qantas has unveiled new Economy seats with larger entertainment screens that will feature across Airbus A330s which operate international flights between Australia and Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo as part of a major refurbishment program. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="31321" img_size="full" alignment="center" css=""][vc_column_text css=""] The multimillion-dollar investment in cabin upgrades will be rolled out across ten A330-200 aircraft and includes: Installing the brand-new Economy seats that have been designed with extra customer comfort for Qantas’ Project Sunrise ultra-long haul flights. 4K OLED 13.3” entertainment touchscreens for Economy with the latest generation user interface (20 per cent larger than the existing screen). USB-C fast charging and Bluetooth audio connectivity for Economy which allow users to use their own headphones. Other key elements of the A330 cabin upgrade program include new mood lighting and the replacement of all curtains and carpets. The existing Business Suites with fully-flat beds will remain on the aircraft. They continue to receive positive feedback from customers and are the same product that feature on Qantas’ A380 and 787 Dreamliner fleet. Work on the first A330 is expected to start in mid-2025 in Qantas’ Brisbane maintenance facility with the first refurbished aircraft entering service by the end of the calendar year. The refurbishment program is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace said the multi-million dollar investment in existing A330s cabins would upgrade the experience for both passengers and crew as more new international aircraft progressively join the fleet over the coming years. Qantas announced the final piece of its jet fleet renewal program last year with a firm order for 24 aircraft to progressively replace its existing A330s – 12 Airbus A350s and 12 Boeing 787s arriving from FY27 into the next decade. The longer range delivered by the 787 and A350 aircraft on order means they will be able to operate all the routes the A330s currently operate, as well as open up new ones. The A330 aircraft being upgraded are scheduled to leave the Qantas fleet towards the end of the replacement program. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="31322" img_size="full" css=""][vc_single_image image="31324" img_size="full" css=""][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="31323" img_size="full" css=""][vc_single_image image="31325" img_size="full" css=""][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""] Update on international Wi-Fi roll out Qantas has also started its international Wi-Fi roll out across the A330 fleet. Fast and free Wi-Fi is expected to be available for Qantas flights on some routes in Asia using the Wi-Fi enabled A330 aircraft from December this year. Passengers on activated aircraft can already to connect W-Fi while flying over Australia to and from destinations such as Hong Kong, Delhi and Bengaluru. The service will offer enough bandwidth for every passenger to enjoy a fast and consistent connection, similar to Qantas Domestic Australia flights where the speed and reliability of inflight Wi-Fi has driven average take-up rates of 75 per cent, with some routes showing up to 100 per cent uptake. Starting from this year, Cathay Pacific's 30 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will receive a significant makeover, featuring new Business and Premium Economy cabins, as well as a refreshed Economy. This overhaul isn’t just a simple facelift: it’s part of a larger plan to ensure that they remain at the forefront of design and innovation in the skies. “We have a very clear product lifecycle strategy,” says Vivian Lo, General Manager Customer Experience & Design at Cathay. “Each plane is on a schedule for us to bring in fresh new products, to ensure that we deliver on our ambition to be one of the world’s greatest service brands – and, from there, the best premium airline.” [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="31150" img_size="full" alignment="center" css=""][vc_column_text css=""] “We wanted to create a different feeling in each cabin, but also something holistic and connected.”  Fuelled by this ambition, the Cathay Customer Experience & Design team joined forces with longstanding partners JPA Design  to design the new cabins, centred around passenger needs. “It was all about creating the most human-centric environment,” says Elliott Koehler, Creative Director at JPA Design. From the refined, sophisticated ambience of Business to the fresh, dynamic energy of Cathay Pacific's Economy cabins, you’ll notice the difference as soon as you walk on board. The harmonious palette of nature-inspired materials, combined with smart lighting design, makes for a warm, welcoming environment. “We wanted to create a different feeling in each cabin, but also something holistic and connected,” says Koehler.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="31151" img_size="full" alignment="center" css=""][vc_column_text css=""]The designers paid meticulous attention to every detail, no matter how small, to create the most thoughtful experience in the skies. Taking cues from their award-winning Cathay Pacific lounges, they hand-picked every material to create a sense of calm and designed every feature for intuitive use.   “It’s thoughtfully designed and effortlessly intuitive. That’s what truly sets us apart.”   Artistry takes flight in their Business cabins, where their all- new Aria Suite offers superb comfort, privacy and practicality. The large lie-flat beds fully extend for a restful sleep, and new features – a privacy door, wrap-around seat design and sliding partitions between seats – enhance your feeling of seclusion. Each feature has been designed to be as intuitive and useful as possible, from smart stowage to a large side table complete with a wireless charging station. “When you’re in the Aria Suite, you’ll find that technology is really at the forefront,” says Lo. “We brought in a lot of the best tech from the aviation world, and it’s all seamlessly integrated.” Personal 24-inch 4K monitors serve as the “control centre of your experience”, says Lo, allowing you to adjust your seat position, lighting level and more with just a few taps. Or if you’re lying down, you can easily personalise your experience using the panel next to your armrest.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row equal_height="yes"][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_single_image image="31153" img_size="full" css=""][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="31152" img_size="full" css=""][vc_single_image image="31154" img_size="full" css=""][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=""]And as part of their Gallery in the Skies initiative, each of their Boeing 777-300ER Business cabins showcases a unique artwork created by an artist with deep ties to Hong Kong. They’ll be progressively added on board – make sure you keep an eye out. Cathay Pacific's enhanced Premium Economy cabins bring you more of what matters to you most, with a new seat design that provides a greater sense of personal space. Other thoughtful touches add to your comfort on board, including a reading light next to the headrest, as well as clever storage solutions for personal devices. “You’re not getting just a bigger seat,” says Koehler. “It’s a highly customised experience, with a focus on space, privacy and convenience.” Cathay Pacific has also elevated their entertainment system with new 4K widescreen monitors in Business and Premium Economy and Bluetooth audio connectivity throughout the aircraft. You’ll notice the difference as soon as you step on board our Boeing 777-300ER. “It’s thoughtfully designed and effortlessly intuitive,” says Lo. “That’s what truly sets us apart.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
