Australia’s Most Reliable Airline Revealed

Ever wondered which airline is most likely to arrive on time, leave on time, and the least likely to cancel on you at the last second? Well, your questions may now be answered once and for all, with a new Industry Report unveiling Australia’s most reliable airline for 2025.

Most Reliable Participating Airline

The report, which was compiled by the Bureau of Transport Research and Economics (BITRE), looked at the on-time performance of 8 participating airlines (Hinterland, Jetstar, Qantas, QantasLink, Rex Airlines, Skytrans, Virgin Australia and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines). On average, the on-time rate for arrivals was 75.8% across all airlines, with a 75.8% on-time rate across on-time departures as well. Cancellations had dropped below their long-term average, sitting at just 2.2%.

Out of these, regional Airline Hinterland Aviation was the most reliable across the board, arriving on time 88% of the time, departing on time 93% of the top and only cancelling 0.3% of flights. The second most reliable airline in terms of on-time rates was Skytrans, arriving and departing on schedule over 90% of the time.

Most Reliable Major Airline

While all of the major airlines scored lower when compared with the smaller, regional airlines, there was one that still stood out among the rest in terms of arrival, departure and chance of cancellation.

Virgin Australia delivered the best results across the board, with a 76.9% on-time arrival rate, 77.7% on-time departure rate and just 0.9% cancellation rate, over 1% lower than the majors Jetstar and Qantas. In terms of on-time rates Qantas came in second, with a 75.6% on-time arrival and departure rate.
