Elephant Island
Elephant Island, a remote and icy outpost in the South Shetland Islands, is famous for its role in Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary Antarctic expedition. In 1916, Shackleton’s crew took refuge on its harsh, windswept shores after their ship, Endurance, was crushed by ice. The island is mostly covered in glaciers and has no permanent human inhabitants, but it is home to seals, penguins, and seabirds. Despite its extreme conditions, Elephant Island remains a significant historical and wildlife site, visited mainly by expedition cruises.
