Climate

Australia experiences a range of climatic conditions throughout the nation, with the temperature changing vastly depending on where you visit.

In the north of the country, you’ll experience a Tropical and Equatorial climate with heavy wet seasons, high humidity and temperatures ranging between 18 – 35°C. In the south of the country, the climate fits squarely into the traditional four seasons, with temperatures averaging 25°C in the summer and 5°C in the winter. A large portion of central Australia is also covered in desert, with temperatures ranging from 40°C in Summer down to 0°C in winter.

The best times to visit the country according to climate will depend on where you’re visiting. While it’s best to visit Far North Queensland and the Northern Territory during winter as the temperatures are cooler, it’s recommended to visit Tasmania in the summer as temperatures have warmed up. The Eastern and Western Coasts of Australia are both suitable to visit year-round due to their sub-tropical climate.

Capital Cities

Australia is home to eight capital cities – One in each state or territory. Australia’s Capital City is Canberra, which resides in the Australian Capital Territory on the Eastern Coast of Australia. This is also where you’ll find Parliament House and where Australia’s political proceedings typically occur.

Outside of this, Australia’s Capital Cities are:

  • Brisbane (Queensland)
  • Sydney (New South Wales)
  • Canberra (ACT)
  • Melbourne (Victoria)
  • Hobart (Tasmania)
  • Adelaide (South Australia)
  • Perth (Western Australia)
  • Darwin (Northern Territory)

Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne all lie on Australia’s Eastern Coast, and are the most popular tourism cities to visit for adventure, nightlife and shopping. Hobart is located in the southern end of Tasmania, and is a popular destination for foodies and explorers during summer. Adelaide and Perth are both located on the Southern border of Australia, and are quieter and smaller cities, both known for their wineries. Darwin can be found in the far North of Australia, and is a popular city to visit when exploring Australia’s natural formations and wonders.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Australia is an exciting country to visit with a vibrant culture and plenty to do no matter where you visit. If you’re planning to visit Australia in the future, here are some local tips & tricks to help you have the best time possible:

  • Visit outside of peak travel seasons – Australia is beautiful to visit all-year round, and if you visit outside of peak seasons you’re more likely to enjoy cheaper accommodation, shorter wait times and generally fewer other tourists.
  • Bring sunscreen – Australia’s weather is, generally, hot and sunny, and you’re likely to get sunburned if you forget this essential piece! If you forget to pack some, you can pick it up at your local Woolworths or 7/11 store. We recommend SPF50+ to ensure you’re fully covered for days at the beach or in the outdoors.
  • Hire a car – or be prepared to fly between cities. Australia is a big country and everything is fairly well spread out, so it’s beneficial to hire a car or even book some inter-state flights if you want to explore outside of one city.

Familiarise yourself with Australian slang – Australian English can be somewhat unique, and you’ll certainly hear plenty of slang when you’re out and about travelling! Take some time to familiarise yourself with popular Aussie slang terms: Our favourites are ‘Barbie’, ‘Brekky’, ‘Maccas’, ‘Straya’ and ‘No worries’.
