Climate

Canada experiences four distinct seasons, with cold winters and warm summers. Winter, from December to February, is perfect for activities like skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating, especially in destinations like Whistler or Banff. Summers, from June to August, are ideal for exploring Canada’s national parks, hiking, and enjoying lakeside activities. The best time to visit depends on what you want to do—summer is great for outdoor adventures, while winter offers a magical, snowy experience for winter sports enthusiasts.

Capital Cities

Canada’s capital city, Ottawa, is located in eastern Ontario, near the border with Quebec. With a population of just over 1 million people, Ottawa is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and cultural attractions. Visitors can explore Parliament Hill, take a scenic stroll along the Rideau Canal (which becomes the world’s largest skating rink in winter), and visit the National Gallery of Canada. As a bilingual city, both English and French are widely spoken, giving it a unique cultural charm.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Canada is a diverse country, full of natural wonders, beautiful cities and incredibly friendly people! A visit to Canada will be positive however you choose to travel, but your experience is that little bit better if you choose to immerse yourself in local life. Check out some of our top local tips and tricks for travelling:

  • Mind Your Manners – It’s true what people say when they say Canadian’s are the politest nation – so make sure you mind your manners when visiting! Ensure you’re always on time, shake people’s hands, try to avoid controversial topics such as religion and politics, and don’t point.
  • Commute Like A Local – In popular urban cities, the most popular way to commute is via Public Transport such as the bus, so next time you visit Canada, make like a local and hop on a bus! It’s cheap, fast and will help you see a more authentic side of the country.
  • Learn Some French – Canadians speak both French and English, and depending on where you visit, you might find people speaking more French. Take an opportunity to brush up on some basic phrases such as hello, please and thank you – while you’ll likely still be fine with English, it never hurts to learn their native language.
  • Bring Money for Tipping – Similarly to the USA, tipping is customary in Canadian restaurants, so it’s recommended to bring extra cash with you when out and about. The standard tip is typically 20% of the bill in restaurants, and a couple of dollars for bartenders. It’s also appreciated to tip your taxi drivers and hotel staff, although not mandatory.
  • Pack A Universal Adaptor – Canadian power points generally use the 2 flat-pin variety of charger, with between 110 to 120 volts. While you’ll be able to pick up a Universal Adaptor at the airport if you forget, we recommend bringing one with you to save the trouble!
